Yes I said UGH! I most definitely found out today at lunch that sushi and I have a hate/love relationship. Sushi hates me for not LOVING it as some do and I hate it because it built up this HUGE following (my officemates eat it about once a week) by it's put-together looks, healthy ingredients, and light but full satisfaction that let me down to a lowest low today.
I have been stalking this sushi-the philidelphia roll to be exact- roll for about two weeks or more. Julia is a spicy food lover and eats the spicy tuna roll on a regular basis, with it lathered in soy/wasabi mix. Valerie, however, brought about the philidelphia roll. It has salmon, cream cheese, and cucumbers... all of which I enjoy, so heck yes this is all me! I have watched and waited for just the right time and today was the day.
My stomach housed butterflys even down to the minute I picked it up. (Fuji Moto-Japanese Resturant on Hwy 64 in Lexington & they have great food-Hibachi style only now!) I emptied soy sauce packets into a small cup and get the chopstix (yes-trying to get the full experience) wedged between my not too coordinated fingers. As I dip the first piece into the soy sauce, I notice I have an audience. Valerie & Julia have decided this audience-worthy and are watching eagerly from the sidelines. The first bite goes in and..... Nope, that's not me! It's almost as if it is doubling in size rather than getting smaller. I chew chew chew and GULP-it's gone! Yea, ok girls I tried it but this isn't me. When from the left sidelines I hear Kim (in between swollering her sushi roll WHOLE), Brooke you have to eat TWO bites before you can say for sure you don't like it (almost as if she thinks she will change my stubborn mind). I reach for the next piece, dip dip dip in the soy sauce, and -PAUSE- I just couldn't do it! I was sure I didn't like it the first time, who died and left Kim in charge? I guess somebody did because of course I force it into my mouth. Chew chew chew and GLUP its gone again! Yeap, its OFFICIAL this time, I DON'T LIKE SUSHI! Of course that was too easy, Kim forces a bite of her kind (containing crispy shrimp) on me. As the first two bites, DON'T LIKE IT!
As long as this process sounds, it was a short 5-7 minute process and I knew my lunch plan was DOOMED! I go back to my desk, still hungry but now with a HORRIBLE fishy taste in my mouth. What better to get rid of this than a HUGE piece of chocolate cake from the Bistro!!! This would be the point where the love comes into our relationship. As much as I hated sushi it opened up the door for a great excuse-a little love during lunch time... infamous chocolate cake! It was a great end to a bad beginning of lunch today.
Motto of the day: When you have butterflys about eating something for new, you most likely won't like it!
